Das amerikanische Bildungssystem besteht aus drei Hauptebenen: primary, secondary, und post-secondary education.

Primary Education

Die Primary oder Elementary Education ist der deutschen Grundschule vergleichbar. Sie besteht aus einem Jahr Vorschule im Kindergarten und fünf Jahren Grundschule – Klasse 1 bis 5 - beginnend im Alter von fünf Jahren.

Consists of one year of kindergarten, beginning at age 5, and five years of primary education, grades 1 through 5.

Secondary Education

Die Secondary Education dauert sieben Jahre von Klasse 6 bis 12. Oft besuchen Schüler in dieser Zeit zwei getrennten Schulen: in der 6. bis 8. Klasse die Junior High oder Middle School und anschliessend in der 9. bis 12. Klasse die High School. Schüler, die die 12. Klasse erfolgreich abschließen, bekommen das High School Diploma, die Hochschulzugangsberechtigung.

Lasts 7 years, from grades 6 to 12. Usually students attend a separate school from grades 6 to 8 called “middle school” or “junior high school” and then another school from grades 9 to 12 called “high school.” Upon finishing high school, students receive a high school “diploma” which is necessary for entrance to college or university.

Post-Secondary Education

Das „High School Diploma“ berechtigt zum Studium an einer Hochschule (post-secondary education). Während der ersten vier Jahre eines amerikanischen Hochschulstudiums („undergraduate studies“ genannt), können Studenten einen Associate oder Bachelor-Abschluss erwerben. Ein weiterführendes Studium endet mit einem Master oder Doctor-Abschluss. Dieser Abschnitt heißt „graduate studies“. Die Post-Secondary Education, auch Higher Education genannt, umfasst alle Hochschulen (Higher Education), die Undergraduate und Graduate-Abschlüsse anbieten. Zur Higher Education gehören auch die berufliche und die Erwachsenenbildung (adult und continuing education, leisure, vocational, and technical programs). Higher Education wird von colleges, universities, professional schools, community und junior colleges, vocational and technical schools, Kunst- und Musikakademien angeboten.
